My last covers as Art Director of GQ Brasil #09 (December 2011), featuring Men of The Year awards. Selton Mello was the cover for newsstands, photographed in São Paulo by Mauricio Nahas (one of the best ones I’ve worked with during my consultancy at GQ). I think there is too much text on int, what reduces the impact of a special issue suck as Men Of The Year, but it was a editorial decision. The other cover, with Isabeli Fontana photographed by Vincent Peters, was only for subscribers. In that case the board decided to remove all the other headlines. Both were printed with gold pantone.

Cover of GQ Brasil #08 (November 2011). Grazi photographed by J.R. Duran, in São Paulo. In my opinion, the best cover I’ve done at GQ. Grazi is naturally beautiful and spontaneus, and I think this can be perceived on the photo shooting. It’s a doble cover (with gate folder), but it works perfectly only with the front cover.

My last lecture of 2012 took place at Faculdade Belas Artes last Saturday, as part of the Type Conference Diatipo Natal 2012. It was great to talk about my experience at the Master in Typeface Design in Reading-UK, and also to see lots of type colleagues that live in different cities of Brazil. This year’s theme was Teaching Typography, and the auditorium was full, with 300 type lovers.

2011, the year dedicated to GQ Brazil

My one-year consultancy as Art Director at GQ Brazil magazine comes to an end. It was a great experience and a privilege to work with great designers, photographers and illustrators. Now it’s time to get back to my design consultancy agency. On January, I’ll reactive some projects I’ve postponed when I accepted the challenge to hire the art team and implement the project of the world-leader male magazine GQ in Brazil. But before that, time to rest and celebrate the achievements of the last two years when I started my new business CruzMedia. On December, the vacation I well deserve after working two years in a row. See you guys in 2012!

I’m very pleased to have the chance to break the word Fernanda in 3 lines, her name was too long to fit in one. I think it’s better to have it like this, instead of having it in a smaller type size. Yet, it doesn’t compromise the reading at all.

Will people get used to the new layout of Facebook?

Only time will tell. My opinion is that yes, people will love it after a while.

But one thing you can take for granted: people tend to reject major layout changes by default, because they know where things are. The challenge is to make people embrace the new way to get access content. But when you redesign magazines, newspapers or websites, usually you have to deal with the experience of thousands of people. For the first time in history, a redesign like this one was experienced by more than 750 Million people around the globe. Not an easy task, for sure!

Cover for the third issue of GQ Brasil (May 2011). Cesar Cielo was photographed by Maurício Nahas at the swimming pool of Unique hotel, in São Paulo.

At my point of view, the best cover we´ve done so far. It was the coldest day of the year, but Cielo made ir thorough the hole afternoon inside the swimming pool, and still in good mood. Congrats to Nahas for capturing the exact moment the water splashed in Cielo´s chest (and thanks to Nahas’ assistant for generating the waves!).

I enjoyed the result, the construction of the elements resulted in a strong and unusual cover. Tiago Leifert was great at the photo-shooting, althought he is not an actor or model, he was very natural and confident.

After 3 months of planning, research, tests and production, the first edition of GQ Brasil is finally out for sale. I´m very proud of being part of it, as Art Director.

In a few hours, we have the launch party. Tomorrow, at the newsstands and on the iPad (free download).
